Fishing in Brazil ...... If you dare!
It's almost 5:30 am, the birds are doing the dawn chorus bit and an eerie mist dances across the river. The swirl of a huge fish sets your pulse racing as the first tentative ray of sunlight heralds a new day. Another fish probably a Peacock Bass, surfaces only feet from the jetty panicking a small school of baitfish. In child-like anticipation you tie on your favorite lure , then after pausing momentarily to capture the moment on camera you get down to business.
Your first cast drops a bit short but is met with the immediate thump thump of a decent fish which suddenly wakes up, taking twenty yards of line before cartwheeling out of the water and shedding the hooks.

= 0 Not good!Second cast - spot on, a violent take almost wrenches the rod out of your hands, once again the fish becomes air-borne, this time leaving the hooks embedded in the branches of a partly submerged tree.

= 0 Definitely not good!!Resisting the offer of a cigarette from your fishing mate you soldier on, this time adding a wire trace and upping hook sizes on your lure. Sure enough an instant take results and after a hectic couple of minutes the fish, an aruana of about 5lbs is beaten and ready for the net. What the......? there is a huge swirl and the water erupts as a massive fish, obviously looking for an easy meal, clamps its toothy jaws firmly aroung your prize catch and sets off across the river like an express train! Hanging on manfully, the line disappearing from your reel at a rate of knots, you suddenly realize that your whole body is trembling. Suddenly the monster takes to the air shaking it's head violently and the line goes slack. The aruana is still hooked and as you reel it in to assess the damage another leviathan launches itself at your fish, falling just short. Ten seconds later you lift out the head of a fish, all that's left from the savage onslaught. I suppose half a fish is better than none you think, laughing to yourself.

= 0.5 Oh **** my brain hurts!!!!You have been fishing avidly for 30 years, caught 1,000's of fish of all shapes and sizes from river, lake and sea. It's taken only 3 casts whilst fishing in Brazil to make you feel like a novice again!

My wife bless her, thinks I am completely mad. She has absolutely no comprehension of the immense pleasure we as anglers get out of our sport.
Thankfully she puts up with my boyish enthusiasm and incessant fishing spiel in the days leading up to a new adventure. She even tried it once, fishing that is! What a disaster, take my advice.... I am not in any way being sexist here but unless your wife/partner enjoys rolling in mud, being bitten by giant unidentifiable insects and coming home smelling like a dead octopus, please leave them at home!
In my match fishing days I spent a lot of time in the Republic of Ireland and fell in love with the place. The freshwater fishing although mainly seasonal can be fantastic. It is only since fulfilling a dream and moving over here that the true potential for all types of angling has become apparent.
At present I live in Co. Galway and within a 30 minutes drive top quality coarse, game and sea fishing abounds. I am sure I will be adding an Irish page shortly, so watch this space!
ps Have you noticed any Triggerfish washed up on your local beach, I have seen lots in the last few weeks, is this unusual?
